Blasting process & principle dry ice blasting

Dry ice blasting is a compressed air blasting process that gently cleans surfaces without water and chemical agents. Solid carbon dioxide in the form of 1.5 – 3 mm thick pellets with a temperature of -79°C is used as blasting medium in surface technology. Dry ice pellets are non-toxic, non-flammable, chemically inert, electrically non-conductive and do not leave any moisture behind.

The dry ice is fed into the compressed air jet in a controlled manner. The dry ice particles are shot through a jet nozzle at very high speed onto the contaminated surface. The layer of dirt is locally supercooled, becomes brittle and detaches from the surface due to different coefficients of thermal expansion. In comparison to sand or other solid blasting media, dry ice converts directly from a solid to a gaseous state at ambient pressure and evaporates completely residue-free.

Subsequent granules penetrate into the brittle cracks and sublimate abruptly on impact. During sublimation a strong increase in volume takes place. This completely separates the layer to be removed from the substrate. The advantages of this hardly abrasive blasting process are that no blasting medium remains and only the dissolved dirt has to be disposed of. Due to the possibility to clean smallest geometries and different materials without dismantling, dry ice blasting is used in many areas of industry, in car preparation, in facade renovation, in the building trade, in the catering trade and many others to clean casting moulds, engines, assemblies and even complete machines.

2) Dry ice pellets between 1.5mm and 3mm are accelerated to the speed of sound with compressed air. The dry ice pellets lead to a sudden undercooling of the layer of dirt, causing it to become brittle and flake off. Dry ice pellets sublimate (transition from solid to gaseous state) abruptly on impact, thereby completely removing the layer of dirt from the surface.

3) The material is completely cleaned by dry ice blasting and remains undamaged. The remaining dirt can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. The greatest advantage of dry ice cleaning is that no blasting agent residue is created during blasting, as is the case with other blasting methods, e.g. sand or water. Dry ice becomes gaseous and dissolves. Dry ice pellets are non-toxic, non-flammable, chemically inert, electrically non-conductive and therefore do not leave any moisture behind.
