Blasting Process & Principle Dry Ice Blasting
Dry ice blasting is a compressed air blasting process that gently cleans surfaces without water or chemical agents. Solid carbon dioxide in the form of 1.5- 3 mm thick pellets with a temperature of -79°C is used as a blasting agent in surface technology. Dry ice pellets are non-toxic, non-flammable, chemically inert, electrically non-conductive and leave no moisture behind.

The dry ice is fed into the compressed air jet in a controlled manner. The dry ice particles are shot at very high speed through a jet nozzle onto the contaminated surface. The dirt layer is locally subcooled, embrittled and detaches from the surface due to different coefficients of thermal expansion. Compared to sand or other solid blasting media, dry ice changes directly from a solid to a gaseous state at ambient pressure and evaporates completely residue-free.

Subsequent granules penetrate into the brittle cracks and sublime abruptly on impact. Sublimation results in a strong increase in volume. This completely separates the layer to be removed from the substrate. The advantages of this hardly abrasive blasting process are that no abrasive is left behind and only the dissolved dirt has to be disposed of. Due to the possibility of cleaning the smallest geometries and different materials without dismantling, dry ice blasting is used in many areas of industry, in car preparation, in façade renovation, in the construction industry, in gastronomy and above all for cleaning casting moulds, motors, assemblies and even complete machines.
Dry ice blasting removes paint, tar, oil, rubber, silicone, soot, adhesives, food residues and much more.
1) Without dismantling the objects to be cleaned, the surface is freed of various contaminants, such as adhesives, grease, encrustations, oil, graffiti, paint, varnish, ink, paper residues, resin, soot, chewing gum, dirt, tar, wax, binder, bitumen, silicone, separating agents, rubber, burns and much more. If you have special requirements for dry ice cleaning, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time. We will be happy to help you and answer your questions – free of charge, of course!
2) Dry ice pellets between 1.5mm and 3mm are accelerated to the speed of sound with compressed air. The dry ice pellets lead to a sudden subcooling of the dirt layer, which makes it brittle and flakes off. Dry ice pellets sublimate (transition from solid to gaseous state) abruptly on impact, thereby completely removing the dirt layer from the surface.
3) The material is completely cleaned by dry ice blasting and remains undamaged. The remaining dirt can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. The biggest advantage of dry ice blasting is that there is no residue of abrasive during blasting, as is the case with other blasting processes, e.g. sand or water. Dry ice becomes gaseous and dissolves. Dry ice pellets are non-toxic, non-flammable, chemically inert, electrically non-conductive and therefore leave no moisture behind.
